Lesson 1

THE WORD OF GOD

In this day of infidelity and skepticism, there is no lesson more important than this lesson on the Word of God.  Lesson No. 1 is designed to teach the truth on the inspiration of the Bible.  There are those who deny the Bible in its entirety; these men are called infidels.  There are those who deny the verbal inspiration of the Bible when it contradicts their denominational creeds.  The claim that the Living Oracles make for themselves is that the Word of God is perfect, "converting the soul" (Psalms 19:7).

Jude declares that the faith has been once delivered to the saints (Jude 3), and Peter adds to this testimony when he declares that God has given "us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and virtue" (2 Peter 1:3-4).  One of the warnings of God to His people is that they neither add to nor take away from the Word of God (Revelation 22:18-19).

The conclusion of this is that the Bible and the Bible alone is the only creed for the church to follow and it alone is our only hope.   It is complete in its revelation of the Word of God, and perfect in meeting the spiritual needs of all men.  Paul declared, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works" ( 2 Timothy 3:16-17).  We cannot, therefore add to it or subtract from without destroying its completeness and perfection.  To deny any one passage as having been given by inspiration is equal to denying all of it, and to accept anything as the Word of God other than what is revealed in the Bible is the same as saying the Bible is incomplete.  Let us first, therefore, lay aside all of our creeds, opinions, preconceptions, and prejudices and study the word of God with an open Bible and an open mind.

Use Your Bible – Fill in the Blanks.

1.  "And God ___________________, let there be light; and there was light"(Genesis 1:3).

This is the first use of the Word of God mentioned in the Bible.

2.  "By the Word of the Lord were the ________________ made" (Psalms 33:6).

3.  "Through faith we understand that the ________________ were framed by the ________

       of God…." (Hebrews 11:3).

4.  "The Word of God is _______________ and ________________ and sharper than any

      two-edged sword…."  (Hebrews 4:12).

5.  The Word of God gives ___________________and_________________ to the simple

      (Psalms 119:130).

6.  What is the Word of God like?

            a.         Jeremiah 23:29, "Is not my Word like as __________? Saith the Lord ; and like a ________________that breaketh the rock in pieces?

            b.         John 6:63, "They are  ___________ and they are _____________."

            c.         Luke 8:11, "Now the parable is this:  the ____________is the Word of God."

            d.         Ephesians 6:17, "And the ____________of the ___________, which is the Word of God."

            e.         Psalms 119:105, "Thy Word is a ________ unto my feet, and a __________

                        unto my path."

7.  Things that the Word of God does for us:

a,         John 17:17, "_________________them through thy truth; Thy word is truth."

            b.         James 1:21, "_____________ your souls."  Salvation of the soul is impossible

unless we receive with meekness the Word of God.  This shows the necessity of obedience to the Word of God.

            c.         Psalms 19:7, "The law of the Lord is perfect, _________________ the soul."

If the law of the Lord is perfect to convert the soul, then creeds, manuals, disciplines, confessions of faith, etc. are not necessary.

            d.         Acts 11:14, Words were necessary to _________________ Cornelius and his household.

8.  How are we made clean?  (John 15:3) _________________________________________

Without obedience to the Word of God we cannot be made clean in the sight of God.

9.  Men are born again when they obey all the commandments of the incorruptible

____________ which is the ________________of God (1 Peter 1:23).  The new birth

cannot be accomplished according to the inspired Peter, until the incorruptible seed, the

Word of God is planted in the heart of the individual and obeyed.  How foreign to the

Word of God is the idea that man can be born again by some mysterious force acting on

his heart before he has obeyed God's Word!

10.  Our attitude toward the Word of God should be that of being _______________ of the

Word and not _______________ only (James 1:22).

11.  By what will we be judged in the day of Judgment?  (John 12:48). _________________

       __________________________________________________________________.

12.  What will happen to those who take away from the Word of God? (Revelation 22:19)

        _____________________________________________________________________

13.  Every preacher is charged to __________ the _____________(2 Timothy 4:2).

Human opinions, decrees of popes or councils, or human creeds are not part of the

True gospel preacher's message.  He is to preach the Word only!

14.  What is God's power to save?  (Romans 1:16). _____________________________

15.  Do we know anything about God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, Heaven, Hell or the church

and how to be saved except what we learn in the Bible?_______________________

_________________________________________________________________________

IF YOU HAVE GIVEN BIBLE ANSWERS TO THE ABOVE QUESTIONS, THE FOLLOWING

FACTS SHOULD NOW BE QUITE APPARENT:______________________________________

1.  That all human creeds are completely unnecessary.

2.  No human being can be saved without complete obedience to the Word of God

     (Matthew 7:21-23).

3.  When the Book of Revelation was completed, the Word of God was settled and sealed.

It cannot be added to or taken from.  It is complete and it is perfect.  No man can receive

a Modern-Day revelation directly from God.  God has spoken (Hebrews 1:1, 2).

4.  We should all have the utmost respect for what God has said.  His Word must be the

final appeal in all matters religious.  We will be judged by the Word of God in the final Day.
